Isaiah 61 carries us into the future to the time of Israel's spiritual conversion and national deliverance. The opening verses of the chapter make that clear. We may stop for a moment and ponder the prospects of glory that are here held out to Israel and set forth in embryo in verses 1-3. Here is the Son of God declaring His commissioning by the Father and His enduement by the Holy Spirit Here are the spiritual blessings of the gospel promised to Israel. Here is national deliverance from bondage. Here is day of the Lord and judgment upon Israel's enemies promised. Our text refers to the Jewish believers in that day rejoicing and exulting in the experience of the promised mercy of God. It must be stated that Israel will be saved in exactly the same way as have all previous generations of converts. It is salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, and in Christ alone. Consequently we have a wondrous picture presented to us of how God saves sinners today.
