III. THE CREATION OF THE WOMAN SUPPORTS PAUL’S VIEW OF HER SUBORDINATE POSITION

1. Man was created first in God’s image and glory. In a very limited way man reflects the sovereignty of God in that he was placed over the earthly creation, Psalm 8:4-9.

2. Woman was created in man’s glory. The woman preceded from the man and was intended for his help and to complete his existence.

3. The head-covering signals a woman’s submission to God’s order and therefore ought to be worn. Verse 10, the woman makes a declaration, even to the angels, that she yields to her position in creation by wearing a head-covering. This verse reminds us of the angelic presence in the assembly of the saints, Exodus 26:1, 31. Angels are more closely associated with believers than we think, I Cor 4:9, I Tim 5:21,

IV. PAUL SEEKS TO AVOID A MISUSE OF MAN’S POSITION

He reminds all of the interdependence that exists between the man and the woman and the equal dependence of both upon the Lord, verse 11-12.

V. PAUL’S FINAL APPEAL IS TO NATURE

After appealing to the divine analogies and to order established in creation, Paul now appeals to the instinct for truth within the heart of the child of God, verse 13.

1. He calls them to judge the matter. The word comely means fitting. While it is the heart that God judges, I Sam 16:7, our outward adorning tells something about the heart. The heart cannot be right while God’s order is defied.

2. He appeals to the general and established usage of mankind. Verses 13-15.

3. Those who contend for this disorderly behaviour ought to know that there is no such custom in other churches. We should take into consideration the views and actions of other believers. These truths stand for all time.
