The 11th picture of Christ Gideon and his likeness to Christ. We can find glimpses of our Saviour in the lives of many of those believers we encounter in the Bible. Gideon is an example. He, like every believer, is a "new creature," 2 Corinthians 5:17. We are made "the righteousness of God," 2 Corinthians 5:21. When we are saved we can say with Isaiah, God "hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness," Isaiah 61:10. We shall therefore bear His likeness. We can search out the record of Gideon's life and see in it pictures of the Lord Jesus. At the beginning of his story let us note: I. The circumstances that prevailed in Gideon's day. They picture for us the world into which the Saviour came in His office of Redeemer. Today we will note that: Before Gideon there came a forerunner. Verse 7-10. 1. The prophet was unnamed. His message is important, not his person. John the Baptist humbly said of himself: "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness," John 1:23. He rejected the title of 'Christ'. "When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed . . . . I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? . . . What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias." 2. He reminded them of their former privileges. Verses 8-10. 3. He reminded them of their sin. Verse 10. " . . . but ye have not obeyed my voice."
