Lessons from the raising of Lazarus. "And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth," John 11:43. (Preached in Penticton FPC. First preached in Lisbellaw FPC, 22nd February 1970) There is recorded in the gospel three occasions when Christ raised the dead. Each one differed in circumstances and detail. I believe that each one of the resurrections teaches us important truths regarding the wonderful grace of God toward dead sinners. The first was the raising of the little girl in Mark chapter 5. She was but a short time dead before she was raised by the Saviour. Her resurrection speaks to us of those saved early in life before the power of sin begins to take hold and drag the sinner down into depravity. The second resurrection recorded is that of the young man, the widow's son, Luke 7. He was dead a little longer; they were taking him to the graveyard when Christ intervened. His resurrection reminds us of the conversion of one who is beginning to descend into the ways of wickedness and sin. The third occasion of resurrection is that of Lazarus and it is the subject of our consideration this evening. He was a mature man who had lain in the grave and who had begun to corrupt and decay. He pictures for us the sinner sunk down in iniquity whose life stinks to heaven, such is its foulness and wretchedness. Let us learn lessons from this passage.
