Simon of Cyrene bearing the crossRev. Ivan FosterMatthew 27:32 · Sunday - PMMon Sep 13, 2010
Simon of Cyrene bearing the cross "And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross," Matthew 27:32. In Luke's account of this incident, it is said that Simon was "coming out of the country" (Luke 23:26). That is, he was coming into the city of Jerusalem from the surrounding countryside, where perhaps he lived or worked. Whatever his reason for being there, he suddenly found himself at the centre of the greatest drama in all of human history, the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. What a wonderful providence placed him there! Surely we see that God ordaineth and ordereth all things for the furtherance of His glorious purpose. Let us examine the incident and learn what it means to bear the cross of Christ.
