Our harp hung upOur song lostRev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - PMPsalm 137:1 · Fri Sep 11, 2009
Preached in Penticton FPC on Lord's Day 6th September 2009 "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion," Psalm 137:1 How clear is the image of ourselves presented in the looking glass of God's word? Whether we read of the experiences of the nation of Israel as a whole or some individual like David, we can so often see ourselves mirrored in the struggles and turmoils encountered by the subjects of the Bible's story. We see our deliverance from sin by the blood of the Lamb in the story of the Passover. We see the ongoing battle against our inward corruptions in the unceasing conflict between Israel and the remnants of the Canaanite nations. In our text we see the consequences visited upon a people who sin and are led into captivity. How often we are led into captivity and its sorrows by reason of our sins? When that happens we lose our song and hang up our harp, the instrument most commonly used to accompany the OT saints in their singing. I preach today that we might obtain deliverance from our prison houses and recover our song.
