“And take . . . the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” Ephesians 6:17.
III. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPLOYS THIS WEAPON IN UNION WITH HIS PEOPLE.
We are commanded to “take” the sword.
1. The word “take” means to take hold of with the hand.
The Christian must become familiar with the sword in order to use it. Recall David’s words, 1 Sam 21:9.
2. The sword cannot be used without the Spirit’s aid.
1 Thess 1:5, Mark 16:20.
3. This sword identifies our enemies.
Modern technology supposedly identifies the enemy for the soldier. This sword did that long ago unfailingly. Isa 8:20, 2 Peter 2:1; 1 John 2:18-22, 4:1-3; 2 John 7, Jude.
4. This sword will motivate and encourage.
It will remind us of the great issues that are at stake, 2 Sam 10:12. It reminds us of the consequence of disobedience, Rev 21:7; Hebrews 10:38-39.With this sword in our hand we are inwardly assured of victory. It speaks of victory to us. It takes away all fear. It enables us to sing in the midst of the battle. Isaiah 41:10, 14-15; II Kings 6:16.Let us fight as Eleazar, 2 Sam 23:9-10.
