Time to turn backRev. Ivan FosterRuth 1:6 · Sunday - PMSun Aug 25, 2013
It is time to turn back "Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread," Ruth 1:6. (Preached in Clogher Valley FPC evening service, 25th August, 2013, by Rev Ivan Foster) The experiences of the people of God parallels those of the saints of old exactly. While we most definitely cannot tell "what shall be on the morrow," James 4:14, we can however tell the path that the people of God will follow in a general sense for "there is no new thing under the sun," Ecclesiastes 1:9. Paul says: "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope," Romans 15:4. The record of the experiences of the Old Testament saints has been given and preserved of God for our instruction. "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come," 1 Corinthians 10:11. In the light of this I wish to look at our text and consider why it is time for the people of God in Ulster, particularly Free Presbyterians, to learn from the actions of Naomi and return from whence we left. I do not think too many will argue that we are not where we once were as a denomination. We have but to look at our meetings and we see immediately that we are not experiencing what we once did in them. This will be particularly known to the older members of our churches. The power, the blessing, the joy -- these are no longer there, certainly to the measure that was known in the past.
