"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ," Philippians 1:6. It can never be emphasised enough that salvation is of the Lord. The peoples of the world are busily engaged in seeking to work their way to eternal rest. The works they engaged in are manifold and varied but are universally designed to merit entrance to glory after death. Religions which hate each other are nevertheless agreed in their soteriology. They all believe that man must earn his way to heaven though they differ, even unto death, on the works that must be undertaken. However, the matter is settled here in our text regarding whose work it is that brings salvation. Here is the positive side of that truth set for negatively in Ephesian 2:8-9. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
