Days of the Messiah, Pt1Studies in Malachi · part 19 of 25Rev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - AMMalachi 3:1-6 · Sun Aug 24, 2008
We commence a new section. As is so often the case in Scripture, particularly in the minor prophets, a passage in which the sins and failures of God's people are exposed and condemned is quickly followed by a setting forth of the triumphant mercy and grace of God's sovereign and saving purpose in Christ. This portion is an example of this. From the dismal display of the failures of Israel we are turned to the promise of the Messiah and His forerunner. Here is encouragement for the struggle and a clear and terrible warning to those who defy and disobey God. There is a direct response to the question in the last verse of the previous chapter. "Where is the God of judgment?" Soon they would get there answer for judgment was central to the purpose of the Messiah.
