Challenged when wrong - a mercyNaaman's loving servantsRev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - PM2 Kings 5:13 · Sun Aug 17, 2008
The world is on the wrong road and travelling to a destination far different from that which most individuals are anticipating. The task of the Christian is to point out the folly of men to them. That is not an easy task since it is generally believed by men that they are on the right road and they take great exception to being corrected. But we are required to act as "correctors! Our ministrations, though executed with the very best of intentions, are not appreciated. How many in heaven will be there because someone corrected them when they were wrong! "Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest (correcteth), O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law," Psalm 94:12. The whole work of the believer is to induce and persuade men of their sin and error. "And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks," Acts 18:4. The passage before us serves to illustrate the solemn obligation of the believer to seek to set men right regarding the right way and the folly of rejecting the mercy of the gospel as well as setting us an example in how to carry out this duty graciously and encouraging us with the good result which may be achieved. Naaman most foolishly and for reasons of pride, turns his back upon the cure for his leprosy which Elisha the prophet has set before him. His servants approach Naaman and gently seek to turn him back from his madness. Their wise counsel forms our text.
