II. CONSIDER THE NATURE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BELIEVER AND THE SINNER

1. Not merely in the dark but we were darkness. For ye were. . . darkness, verse 8. A Christian may find themselves in darkness but they will never again be DARKNESS. Micah 7:8. Ps 23:4. The darkness was not merely around us but was in us. Our whole being was darkness. We considered the natural state of mankind in 4:18. The understanding was darkened. John 8:44-at one with devil.

2. There is no knowledge of God in the unbeliever. No knowledge, Acts 17:23. This is the reason for his darkness and for our light. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, John 8:12. Ps 1O:4-no “divine spark.”

3. The natural man loves darkness and hates the light. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil, John 3:19. Why is the gospel rejected? Because men hate the light of God, v 20.

4. The whole nature of the converted sinner has been changed. They are no longer darkness but now are they light. But now are ye light in the Lord, verse 8. We have not merely had light shine upon us but it has !.i!/!J entered us and poss~sses us. Ps 112:4.
