The Honour of Holiness, Pt 2Rev. Ivan FosterDeuteronomy 26:18-19Sun Jul 12, 2015 · Sunday - AM
THE HONOUR OF HOLINESS, Pt 2 (Read 16-19, 28:1-14) "And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; and to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken," Deuteronomy 26:18-19. Last week we considered - THE WONDERFUL PRIVILEGES OF CHRISTIANS. Today we will DV conclude our study by considering: 1. THE DISTINGUISHING MARK OF THE BELIEVER. " . . . that thou shouldest keep all his commandments," V 18; 28:1-2. True inward grace shows itself in outward works of holiness. Inward healing, outward change, Mark 5:29. 1. Here is the rule of our behaviour. "His commandments". 2. The extent of that rule. "All his commandments" verse 18. This is a day of man challenging God's authority and many Christians are also guilty by their refusing commandments they object to. 3. The essence of our obligation to God. "Keep". The word means to "observe, heed, watch." Ps 119:4-6. "I have stuck (clung) unto thy testimonies," Ps 119:31. Gen 2:24 = 'married'. As Ruth clung to Naomi, Ruth 1:16-18, so let us cling to God's Word in a union of love. 2. THE BLESSED CONSEQUENCE OF OBEDIENCE. 1. God's Word elevates us. 2. High in praise, name, honour. This is an exalting of which only God is capable! 3. Made holy.To be holy is to be like God! "Be ye holy; for I am holy," 1 Peter 1:16. "Lord make me as holy as a pardoned sinner can be," Robert Murray McCheyne. What greater honour is there than this? Heaven's glory will follow, 1 John 3:2.
