Relevance of ProphecyGod Says Take HeedRev. Ivan Foster · Special Meeting2 Peter 1:19 · Sat Jun 28, 2008
Preached at a meeting in London, England, convened by The Sovereign Grace Advent Testimony. Nothing is more dark to the human mind than the future. It truly is unknown. Isaac said: "Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death," Genesis 27:2. He speaks for us all on this topic. It is to be noted that Isaac was under the impression that he was soon to die when he uttered these words, verse 1. As it turned out, he lived another 40 years! The truth is we "know not what shall be on the morrow," James 4:14. Our natural state of ignorance regarding the future increases the value of that which sheds light upon it. That is what makes prophecy not only relevant but invaluable. Our text tells us some very important truths relevant to our subject. PROPHECY IS A SURE WORD FROM GOD It is not an area of speculation and guesswork; a topic which if studied will lead to delusion and confusion; a road of sand that may sink at any time beneath the foot of the pilgrim. That is how foolish men have depicted the whole subject of prophetic study. Of them I ask: Was the study of the prophets' predictions of the Saviour's first coming something to be avoided even as they suggest the study of the Bible's predictions of His second coming is not to be commended? Was such a study unprofitable even as the study of the end times is so often mockingly deemed to be? I say shame to those ministers who thus decry the study of that which God has placed before us with the express command that we diligently study!
