HOW CHILDREN MAY ESCAPE THE SINS OF THEIR FATHERS "Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities," Lamentations 5:7. It is said of David: "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep," Acts 13:36. That is the most anyone of us may do. For the preacher, he must speak the truth without fear of favour if he is to serve his generation. This chapter vividly sets forth the consequences of sin for a people and upon their offspring. The details of Judah's suffering is recorded that all might learn that the harvest of sin and unfaithfulness is very great indeed. I recently read a warning issued by a 25-year-old who dived into shallow water and broke his neck which left him totally paralysed. He was engaged in the silly craze of "tombstoning!" It is evident from the news reports that few if any paid him heed! So it is with sin but there is an even heavier price to be paid by individuals and nations who do not heed God's warnings. There is counsel and direction for us all in these words but they are especially applicable to Ulster given the spiritual and political changes that have been initiated in the last few years and the sad consequences of those changes.
