Studies in Haggai, #12Back to work · part 12 of 13Rev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - AMHaggai 2:20-23 · Sun Jun 11, 2006
This final prophecy, delivered on the same day as the last one (10, 20), is a reinforcing of the latter part of the message delivered on "the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month," 2:1. It is that portion of the prophecy which set forth a future exaltation of Jerusalem and a glorifying of the temple. In the two month interval, doubtless many fears had sprung up amongst the leaders. Remember, there was a but a very weak remnant of Israelites in the ruined city and they felt themselves very much in danger from their enemies. Therefore, they deemed themselves in no fit state to become engaged in the sort of military activities they would deem necessary to exalt Jerusalem. They feared that such convulsions as depicted in 2:6-7 would result in their destruction rather than their exaltation. It is a strange fact that the word intended for our encouragement is so often misunderstood by us that it leads to our despair!
