God would have His people honour Him. This is His due but WHAT LITTLE HONOUR IS GIVEN TO THE LORD BY HIS PEOPLE! 1. It is chiefly lacking from those from whom it is chiefly due! The priests! We are priests, 1 Peter 2:5, 9 2. Its lack is unnoticed by the culprits. "Ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?", verse 6. This again entails an attack upon God's integrity. It was like Eli's blindness to his sons wickedness, 1 Sam 2:22-25, 29-30. 3. Dishonouring of God is seen in our actions. Verses 7-8, 12. "If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words," Isaiah 58:13. 4. Self-honour replaces an honouring of God. Kept the good for themselves and gave the blind, lame and sick to God! verse 8. 5. Dishonouring of the Lord will bring a dishonouring of us. Verse 14. A curse follows! "Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed," 1 Samuel 2:30.
