Christ knocking on the Free Presbyterian door. Revelation 3:20. (Preached in Bangor Free Presbyterian Church) This epistle was written to a church about 40 years old. It is likely that it was founded around about the same time as the church at Ephesus during Paul's third missionary journey. It was about 40-50 miles east of Ephesus. If the spiritual atmosphere of Laodicea was anything like that which prevailed in Ephesus at its commencement then it would have seen a great revival. "And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks," Acts 19:10. This information will give us the setting for this epistle. It reminds us of the changes that can come about within a church during a generation irrespective of what its history has been. "And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel," Judges 2:10.
