Stormont's Day of SmilesForeshadow of sorrow to comeRev. Ivan Foster · Sun May 13, 2007Revelation 11:7-10 · Sunday - PM
The Bible has many wonderful things to say about laughter, especially the laughter of the enemies of righteousness. Here is an example. "For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity," Ecclesiastes 7:6. It is short-lived! I have thought of that laughter as I look at the reports of the commencement of the new power-sharing government in Stormont. It seems to have been a day of much laughter and broad smiles. I am one of the many in Northern Ireland who could not rejoice at these events. Rather, sorrow of heart was the abiding emotion on that day. I have no doubt that that which began with so much laughter will end in many tears and I base that observation upon the Word of God. In Luke 6:22-26, we read some solemn words uttered by the Saviour. The laughter in Stormont involved a broad spectrum of people. We saw the murderers laughing, the haters of our Protestant heritage laughing. We saw foes of Ulster from near and far laughing. We saw promise-breakers such as Blair laughing. I think I caught the sound of the devil laughing! But for all those that laugh and rejoice at the events of this last week, I wish to direct you to God's Word in Revelation 11:7-10.
