Secret of self-sacrifice Pt 1Studies in Second Corinthians · part 24 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Apr 6, 19972 Corinthians 4:5-6 · Sunday - AM

In these verses, Paul seeks to enlarge upon what he meant by calling the gospel “our gospel”, verse 3. He also explains the reason why he is willing to adopt such a lowly and subservient position as the “slave” of the church, verse 5. His words also provide us with much about the person and glory of the Saviour, verses 5-6.

I. THERE WAS NOTHING OF PAUL IN PAUL’S GOSPEL

We preach not ourselves.

1. Many preach themselves while preaching the words of the gospel. They promote themselves. People are left contemplating the preacher rather the Christ.

2. Many preach themselves by setting their views and notions above the Bible. Preachers must stand in awe of God’s Word.

3. Many preach themselves and seek to promote their own interests. Phil 1:15.

All this Paul repudiates again, 2:17; 3:2, 5.

4. Paul's gospel was of Christ. “Christ Jesus the Lord”

3 Aspects of the Saviour was highlighted.

  1. He was the divinely appointed One. Christ.
  2. He was the Incarnate One. Jesus.
  3. The Almighty One. The Lord.

Is He all these to you?
