Superiority of the Gospel to the Law, 3Studies in Second Corinthians · part 19 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Mar 2, 19972 Corinthians 3:12-18 · Sunday - AM

Two further demonstrations of the gospel’s superiority is presented to us in these remaining verses. It has to be said that when Paul nails down his case he nails it down permanently.

I. THE PLAINNESS WITH WHICH THE GOSPEL MAY BE PREACHED

Unlike Moses, who veiled his face and so concealed the glory that rested upon him, the New Testament minister seeks to reveal Christ and His glory with great plainness.

1. The unveiled face of Moses was a fearful thing to the Israelites.  And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him, Exodus 34:30. Such clarity was not for them to enjoy but it is ours to enjoy. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father, Romans 8:15. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, 2 Timothy 1:7-8.

2. The veiled face of Moses indicates obscurity. There was a hiding away of the glory to which God was bringing His people. As Moses died without seeing the Promised land, so the OT saints had much of the glories of salvation in Christ concealed from them. It pleased God to do so. Matt 11:25, Hebs 11:13.

3. The lifting of the veil is not accomplished by the law but by the gospel. 14-15, 4:4-6. That veil is upon some here. You are blind to the glories of Christ.

II. THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL WHEN PREACHED

Things really happen when the gospel is preached. Just as water wears away the rock whether it be by the constant dripping of tiny droplets or the rushing torrent, so the preaching of the gospel accomplishes the purpose of God.

1. The veil is lifted.  The word means to take away completely. It is not the lifting of one corner but a complete removal. Full understanding is granted. Nothing remains concealed.

One day this will happen for Israel. And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations, Isaiah 25:7. Context indicates just when this will be, see verse 8, Rev. 1:7. Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children, Isaiah 66:8.

2. Liberty is experienced. Verse 17. Gospel is called the law of liberty, James 1:25. Obedience to it brings liberty from all that the Law could not. It instilled fear, despair, guilt. The gospel inspires hope, peace, joy. These are the fruits of the gospel by the Holy Spirit, Gal 5:22-23.

3. Transformation is wrought. Verse 18. Unveiled face gazes into mirror of God’s word and a change is effected by the working of the Holy Spirit through the Word.

Christian what you read in the Bible is what God would have you become.
