"The New Testament Christian" Studies in 1 Thessalonians 1 Why study such an elementary topic? Surely, it may be said, that it is well known what Christianity is all about! After 2000 years of the doctrines of the Bible being taught in this area of the world, you would think it so. But such an idea is far from the truth. The knowledge of what is a New testament Christian is not merely absent from the mind of the average unconverted man, but many who profess faith in Christ are also sadly lacking in a proper understanding of Biblical Christianity. The average 'professing Christian' today knows no more about the teachings of the Bible than did those to whom the Saviour declared: "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures," Matthew 22:29. There are seasons of the day when the light dims. Spiritually, such times of dimness are also experienced by the people of God. I believe that we have entered into the beginnings of just such a time again. Did not the Saviour tell us: "Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:8. And again, we are told by Paul: "The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night," 1 Thess 5:2-3. This age is to end in darkness. The hour of the Saviour's return is declared to be the "midnight" hour in Matthew 25:6. That being so, it is not surprising to see a declining understanding of God's Word and a growing ignorance. This then IS a timely and appropriate topic. If the Thessalonians were not in darkness it was because of Paul's preaching and his battling against the darkness! That is what ministers need to be doing today.
