Mercy and Motivation, Pt 3Studies in Second Corinthians · part 22 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Mar 23, 19972 Corinthians 4:1-2 · Sunday - AM

CERTAIN CONDUCT WILL SPRING FROM A RIGHT VIEW OF THE GOSPEL MINISTRY

1. Private, public and pulpit conduct will be affected.

* The minister will not pursue any private agenda, Paul disowned all dishonesty and all self-advancement. 2 Cor 12:15-19.

* He was not in any way given to pretence. How hateful to God is pretended wisdom and holiness!

* He did use the word of God deceitfully. 2:17. A minister who has a right view of his work will strive to faithfully present the truth irrespective of the consequences for himself.

2. He will pursue a singular purpose. Manifestation of the truth. Here is the essence of preaching.

3. In such actions there will be a commending of the preacher. Conscience will own the truth though the sinner may not do so publicly. Indeed he may hate it but his conscience will own it as true.

A man should preach so as to enlist the support of the conscience irrespective of how the depraved hearts and minds of men may respond. It is not to please men’s minds or hearts but to stir their consciences that we labour.
