What is repentance?A most vital matterRev. Ivan Foster · Sun Feb 7, 2010Matthew 3:1-2,4:17 · Sunday - AM
What is Repentance? "In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, and saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," Matthew 3:1-2. " From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," Matthew 4:17. (Preached in Tavistock FPC) The importance of repentance may be gauged by the place that it had in the preaching of God's servants. It was the central doctrine of John the Baptist, the Lord Jesus and the apostles at the day of Pentecost, Matt 3/2, 4/17, Acts 2/38. It was the substance of Paul's message to the Gentiles, Acts 20/21. Indeed, it forms the heart of the Saviour's commission, Luke 24/47, and is it not now the command of God to all men everywhere. "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent," Acts 17:30. The context in which we find repentance proclaimed shows that it is a vital matter in true religion. NO REPENTANCE ---- NO SALVATION. That being so let us carefully consider what the Bible says about repentance. We will allow it to speak to us.
