Sorrow that brings joy, Pt 3Studies in Second Corinthians · part 51 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Dec 21, 19972 Corinthians 7:2-16 · Sunday - AM

2. Repentance is the first evidence of saving grace. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of, verse 10. Who will quarrel with that which produces repentance?

3. The characteristics of true godly sorrow are given us. Verse 11. There is a false sorrow that does not come from God. It works death, 10. True repentance works life. Note the seven characteristics of it.

A. Carefulness. There was diligent business-like attention given to the things of God. Not slothful in business, Rom 12:11. Same word.

B. Clearing of yourself. It is the word from which we get apology, a defence of ourselves. Steps were taken to remove that which made them transgressors.

C. Indignation. A vexation indignation toward sin.

D. Fear. A dread of sin, I Peter 3:11.

E. Vehement desire. Their heart was hot in its desire to do right.

F. Zeal. As above.

G. Revenge. Justly acting against sin.

III. THE WELLBEING OF THE WHOLE CHURCH DEPENDS UPON A REBUKING OF SIN

It was out of care for the whole church that Paul acted against the offender in Corinth, verse 12.

1. The people were blessed, verse 13. They were comforted, consoled.

2. The preachers were blessed, 13. Both Titus and Paul were made to joy by the out come of the disciplinary measures. Joyed = rejoice. Refreshed = rest. The very thing he could not do while sin remained amongst them, verse 5.

The apostles confidence in them was vindicated, verse 14. What he had boasted of them turned out to be true. Love for the flock has increased and he confidently expects good of the Corinthians, verse 16.
