The importance of the prayer meeting No 3 - The attitude of the enemy to prayer. "And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him," Zechariah 3:1. (Preached in Tavistock FPC) We can gauge the importance of prayer in many ways. There are various yardsticks which we may employ. There is none better than that of considering its impact upon the enemy, the Devil. The enemy always fear most that which damages him and his cause most. The priority that the Devil gives to hindering prayer indicates the true value of prayer and the threat that it poses to his kingdom of darkness and plans to overthrow the cause of God. William Cowper put the matter well when he said: What various hindrances we meet In coming to the mercy seat; Yet who, that knows the worth of prayer, But wishes to be often there! Prayer makes the darkened cloud withdraw, Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw, Gives exercise to faith and love, Brings ev'ry blessing from above. Restraining prayer we cease to fight; Prayer makes the Christian's armour bright; And Satan trembles when he sees The weakest saint upon his knees. When Moses stood with arms spread wide, Vict'ry was found on Israel's side; But when through weariness they failed, That moment Amalek prevailed.
