Characteristics of the Christian Minister Pt 1Studies in Second Corinthians · part 42 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Sep 7, 19972 Corinthians 6:3-10 · Sunday - AM

By the grace of God, Paul was a good minister of Jesus Christ. In every way he was a model minister, 1 Cor 4:16, 11:1. By setting forth his own lifestyle and manner of conduct and vindicating the same, he sets down the characteristics of what a good minister should be.

The blessing of God that was evident in Paul’s life was proof that he had not received the grace of God in vain. It brought forth fruit in his life, irrespective of the circumstances in which he found himself.

I. GODLINESS WILL ATTRACT OPPOSITION

It is timely to remember this in the wake of the adulation that has surrounded the name of Diana, Princess of Wales and “Mother” Teresa.

1. This world continues to hate Christ. John 7/7, 15/18. The word hate = detest.

2. Those who bear His likeness will also be hated. Remember, this is what holiness — it is to bear a likeness to Christ. It indicates that we are not of the world, John 17/14, Rom 8:29, 12:1-2. The more like Christ, the more the hatred.

3. This hatred will result in numerous trials. Paul lists the trials and their sources.

Trials arising from everyday necessities. V 4, 11/27. Paul endured much deprivation in his labours.

Trials arising from the treatment he encountered. In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, verse 5.

Trials arising from his zealous labours.  In labours, in watchings, in fastings, verse 5.
