III. THE ORDER OF EVENTS IN GOD’S PURPOSE

The word order in verse 23, refers to that which has been arranged. It is linked with the order observed in the ranks of men in an army. Paul sets down the order of events that God has purposed. The resurrection of Christ has ensured that a course of events will take place. Redemption has been accomplished by Christ’s death. This the resurrection proves. Now will follow on all that Christ’s blood purchased. The future events  are:—

1. The return of Christ.

Coming = parousia, verse 23. This event is explained in I Thess 3:13. There is no secret rapture, II Thess 2:1, 8.

2. The resurrection of the saints.

I Thess 4:17.

3. The rule of Christ and the destruction of His enemies.

It begins with antichrist and his armies, II Thess 2:8-9, Rev 19:11-21. It continues with the subjection of the earth during the 1000 year reign of Christ, when there will be a restitution of all things, Acts 3:20-2;, Isa 11:6-9; 65:25; Num 14:21. At the end of this period, Satan shall be released and shall lead a final rebellion, Rev 20:7-15.

4. The end shall then come.

Verse 24-28, Dan 7:13-14. Note the use of the words then & when verses 24, 28.These events are sure for they began with the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
