The Lord Jesus came into this world in His incarnation at Bethlehem. The three statements in these verses that define His coming then define His birth. They are part of the Divine strategy that lay behind that event. In these verses there is also emphasis on the fact that the Saviour came because He was sent by the Father. The redemption of sinners is the purpose of the Triune God. The Saviour came on a mission from God as the great Mediator of the Divine purpose. His very coming was part of that plan. The saving purpose of God did not seize upon Him at His baptism or at any other part of His life. As we consider the three aspects of His coming presented in this text, we must bear in mind that this was the purpose of God. What Jesus did on earth in His coming among men was the execution of a Divine plan—He was sent to do as He did. I HE CAME THAT WE MIGHT LIVE THROUGH HIM. II HE CAME TO BE THE PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS. III HE CAME TO BE THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD.
