“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee,” verse 12.

This is the first of the second table of the LAW. The first four sets forth our duty to GOD and the fifth to the tenth commandments teach us our duties to MAN.

The Saviour was asked: “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets,”Matthew 22:36-40. This is the sum of the Bible’s requirements of men.

1. The Lord has something to say to children.

It is most appropriate that our first duty is to our parents. When the Lord tells you to ‘honour’ your father and mother’ that simply means ‘obey’ them. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right,” Ephs 6:1.

We must speak to them and of them respectfully, obey their commands to us when the present and when they are absent. The Lord Jesus set us an example, Luke 2:51.

2. It also means that we must obey those our parents set over us.

For instance, school teachers. They act as your parents while you are in school.

3. Notice the order that God would have us observe in this world.

It is ‘fathers’ first and then ‘mothers’. This is simply because “Adam was first formed, then Eve,” 1 Timothy 2:13. Where God’s order is followed in society and in the home, there is harmony

4. Notice the promise made by the Lord in this commandment.

“That thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” Paul noted this truth. “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise),” Ephesians 6:2.

The life of submission to God’s commandments will bring long life and prosperity. Obedience to God results in deliverance from attacks by men and devils, self-inflicted injuries and hurt, straying into dangerous places — 1 Timothy 6:10-12.
