Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us,” Psalms 2:1-3.

* Boys and girls, I said of Psalm 1 that it was a miniature Bible in which is outlined the grand theme of God’s Holy Book. That theme is simply that holiness will bring joy eternal and sin will bring the soul down to everlasting ruin!

* Psalm 2 provides us with proof that the Lord is Who He claims to be! “Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am] God, and [there is] none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure,” Isaiah 46:9-10.

* This Psalm gives us a precise summary of all that is prophesied related to the Kingdom of Christ in this world. There is given us an insight into the wicked scheme of the devil whereby he recruits men and women, and boys and girls into an evil plot to rebel against the Lord in an attempt to overthrow Him and stop His eternal purpose coming about.

The Lord shares this knowledge with us and would have us understand it!

* Here we are told reassuringly of that which has not yet come about — the final manifestation of the devil’s evil plan and the utter failure of it and the eternal and terrible price that he, and all who join with him in his rebellion, will pay! The Lord Jesus will be seen to be the Glorious Conqueror of all His foes and the Triumphant Redeemer of His chosen people!

* Christians everywhere should study this psalm often in order to understand just what is going on in the world today. Here is the wonderfully condensed view that God has given us of man’s rebellion against Him. We will hear nothing of this in the world’s newspapers and television for the simple reason that mankind is blind to the devil’s scheme, they are blinded participants and do not understand where it is they are being led!

* It is clear from God’s Word and from this Psalm in particular that this world is heading for the horrors of a repeat of the destructions that overtook the old world in Noah’s day and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

* It is therefore appropriate that we look at this psalm at this time of wickedness and rebellion that we might not be caught up in this utterly doomed scheme!

* The psalm is divided up into four sections and I hope to look at these sections here in our Assembly talks.
