Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Pt 3KICS Studies - The things said about the Saviour · part 8 of 13Rev. Ivan Foster · YouthMatthew 13:54 · Tue Nov 30, 2021

“And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this [man] this wisdom, and [these] mighty works?” Matthew 13:54

BEING BLIND TO CHRIST’S DEITY THEY WERE AT A LOSS  TO ACCOUNT FOR HIS PREACHING

1. They saw only His human nature. How amazing that He could live amongst them for nearly 30 years and they did not recognise His divinity. How blind is man! Consider these verses. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made,” John 1:3. “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not,” John 1:10. “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail,” Hebrews 1:10-12.

Here is another verse which I read just this morning. “‭But thou, Bethlehem‭ Ephratah‭, [though] thou be little‭ among the thousands‭ of Judah‭, [yet] out of thee shall he come forth‭‭ unto me [that is] to be ruler‭‭ in Israel‭; whose goings forth‭ [have been] from of old‭, from everlasting‭‭.,” Micah 5:2. The Lord Jesus had His “goings forth‭ [have been] from of old‭, from everlasting.”

Have you recognised the deity of the Lord Jesus?

2. Man is a habitual snob. He cannot accept that wisdom and learning can be found in those apparently lowly! Man seeks after the ‘spectacular, the ‘mysterious’. “(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)” Acts 17:21.

Did you ever wonder why churches that have departed from God and His truth delight in ‘dressing up’, theatrical displays etc?

Man cannot accept the simple message of God’s Word! He likes that which is apparently ‘novel and new’!

3. For this reason the person and preaching of Christ was rejected by His neighbours. He was ‘too ordinary’ to be the Messiah!

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not,” Isaiah 53:3.

What they heard from His lips and the reports of His works elsewhere, were proof enough of His divinity but they could not accept His divinity in the humble ‘garments’ of Christ’s humanity!
