Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?KICS Studies - The things said about the Saviour · part 6 of 13Rev. Ivan Foster · YouthMatthew 13:54 · Thu Nov 18, 2021

“And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this [man] this wisdom, and [these] mighty works?”  Matthew 13:54

A  town usually rejoices at one of its sons rising to prominence and fame in the land. But not so Nazareth!

When the Saviour comes to His own town where he grew up there was manifest resentment and controversy rather than rejoicing and celebration.

This likely is the same incident as is recorded in Luke 4:16-30. Luke tells us in his account that the reception the Lord Jesus received was most wicked indeed. His former neighbours sought to kill Him!

“And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way,” Luke 4:29-30.

The words of questioning by his former neighbours are our study today.

THE MINISTRY OF THE LORD JESUS WAS UNDOUBTEDLY SUPERNATURAL

1. The people were ‘astonished’.

They were ‘breathless with amazement’. What preaching this must have been! The word is linked to having your ‘breath driven out by a blow’. We cannot really imagine what it was like to listen to the Son of God preaching!

We must revere His Word.
