The Inside Story of a 'Down & Out' Pt 16KICS Studies in Jonah · part 16 of 27Rev. Ivan Foster · YouthJonah 2:1-10 · Thu Jun 10, 2021

We continue where we left off on Tuesday morning past.

Our subject has a great lesson for boys and girls - Chastening.

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” Hebrews 12:6-7.

A. Love is the source of chastening - not hatred.

B. It can be severe. Scourging, that is what the Saviour endured before His crucifixion, Luke 18:33.

C. Chastisement is proof of our being the children of the Lord.

CHASTENING BY THE LORD PROMOTES HOLINESS

This is its purpose.

1. In all that he suffered, Jonah saw God’s hand. “For thou hadst cast me into the deep,” verse 3. The deep sufferings Jonah endured were the result of God’s process of recovering him from his backsliding. Sailors’ hands had a part but the superintending power was of God.It is to be noted that Jonah never complained of God’s dealings with him. He understood that The Lord was acting in love.
