Compassion for the contrite Pt 2Studies in Second Corinthians · part 9 of 68Rev. Ivan Foster · Sun Dec 1, 19962 Corinthians 2:5-11 · Sunday - AM

II. BELIEVERS ARE NOT ONLY REQUIRED TO CHASTISE THE IMPENITENT BUT ALSO TO COMFORT THE PENITENT

They must act now that he had repented in a contrary fashion toward the man, verse 7.

1. They must now forgive. Note that repentance comes before forgiveness. There had been no mention of forgiveness in 1st epistle.

2. They must now comfort. This was again contrary to what they had done. He was put out from among them and handed over to Satan, 1 Cor 5:2, 5. Now they were to gather him to their hearts and rescue him from sorrow lest he drown in sorrow (swallowed up).

3. They must show love. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him, verse 8. They had denied him the benefits of their love while he was in sin but now they must assist in restoring him by confirming their love to him again.
