The scene of a massacre turned into a shrine of hypocrisy Matthew 23:29-32.

The Saviour's scathing rebuke of the scribes and Pharisees is most fittingly applied to the religious leaders in Ulster, as they sought to turn the tide of sympathy and grief over the slaughter of the innocent in Enniskillen to the advancing of the cause of false ecumenism and reunion with Rome.

Two weeks after the massacre of 11 Protestants on 8th November 1987 at a wreath-laying ceremony in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, a special service was arranged to commemorate the deaths of the Protestant victims and the dead of two world wars along with those who died in the terrorist campaigns in Ulster.

The Roman Catholic Church refused to be officially represented at this service which was attended by the then Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher.

Despite the intensive ecumenical activities in the wake of the massacre in which she played a very prominent part, Rome still baulked at appearing at a ceremony which involved the honouring of those who served in the Crown forces in Northern Ireland.

Rome's non-appearance served to illustrate the hypocrisy of her feigned words of sorrow and the hollowness of her platitudes in the immediate aftermath of the horrific bombing of those attending the Poppy Day memorial at the Enniskillen cenotaph, on that infamous 8th November 1987.

In this sermon, Rev Ivan Foster sought again to warn the Protestant people of the dangers and deceits of ecumenism.
