Faith's death-bed witnessJacob's dying witnessRev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - PMHebrews 11:21 · Sun Nov 4, 2007
A definition of faith is given us in verse 1 of this chapter 11 of Hebrews. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, a conviction that things not seen as yet, truly exist. Justifying faith is explained for us in Larger Catechism, answer to Question 72. "Justifying faith is a saving grace, wrought in the heart of a sinner by the Spirit and Word of God, whereby he, being convinced of his sin and misery, and of the disability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his lost condition (that which the Bible teaches him about himself), not only assents to the truth of the promise of the gospel, but receives and rests upon Christ and his righteousness, therein held forth, for pardon of sin, and for the accepting and accounting of his person righteous in the sight of God for salvation." This chapter reveals to us instances of this faith at work in the lives of some of the great men and women of God. We wish to consider faith at work in Jacob's heart even as he is dying.
