A little maid - a model missionary (Preached in Kilskeery FPC, 4th December 1988) "And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy," 2 Kings 5:2-3. The hymn writer when he wrote the words: "God moves in a mysterious way,His wonders to perform," put down what Paul has stated for us by inspiration in Romans 11:33-36. "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen," Romans 11:33-36. The goodness of God to His people, the wonderful ways He has of bringing victory out of disaster and blessing out of trouble, is indeed 'past finding out'! The little maid taken from her home is a wonderful example of this. In all her trouble and sorrow she did not forget to honour the Lord and speak of His greatness, His power and His mercy even to those who were the source of her sorrow. Do not think that loving our enemies is a New Testament doctrine. Here is a little maid practising that truth for our instruction and encouragement.
