Baptism briefly considered (2)Mode of baptismRev. Ivan Foster · Prayer MeetingMatthew 3:11 · Wed Oct 8, 2008
"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire," Matthew 3:11. Last week we considered the divinity and the duty of baptism. It is a divine ordinance which every believer is required to duly observe. Now I wish to consider the mode by which it is administered. There is a great controversy regarding this topic. I will give you reasons why I believe in pouring of water upon the head of the candidate. Pouring is a mode of baptism which I believe is in keeping with the teaching of God's Word as the Westminster Confession Faith states: "Dipping of the person into the water is not necessary; but baptism is rightly administered by pouring or sprinkling water upon the person." (Chapter 8:3). To do this I wish to merely look at how the word "baptise" is used by the Holy Ghost and note that there are times when it is used and cannot mean immersion.
