Counterfeits will always be found where there is a commodity of value. It is the greatest evidence of the value of an item or a substance that there are those willing to manufacture a fraudulent copy and seek to make gain by passing it off as genuine. We recently heard that there are some 30 million counterfeit ?1 coins in circulation in the UK! Fraudulent ?1 coins is no disparagement of the genuine coin. Rather it is a compliment. Within the ranks of Christianity there is a similar work of counterfeit take places which is no slight upon genuine believers or the gospel of our Lord Jesus. In every age there have been the Judas Iscariot or Simon the sorcerer. Their presence testifies of the value of the genuine article, the true disciple of Jesus Christ. Simon had appeared sincere so therefore Philip baptised him and he attached himself to Philip, admiring his ministry. "Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done," Acts 8:13. However, the true state of his heart was soon discovered and he was seen to still be in a state of nature, unconverted and unregenerate. His attempt to purchase that which may be obtained only from God revealed his true heart. He wished to purchase the ability to bestow the gifts and power of the Holy Ghost. In the words of our text you have Peter's description of the human heart in its natural, unregenerate state.
