Self examinationMaking sure of heavenRev. Ivan Foster · Sun Sep 26, 20102 Corinthians 13:5 · Sunday - AM
"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" (Preached in Penticton FPC, September 26th, 2010. First preached in Clogher Valley FPC, January 8th, 1978). The believer in Christ fears no examination. There is nothing that such an inspection will reveal that will embarrass for sin has been confessed to Christ. "Bold shall I stand in that great day, For who aught to my charge shall lay, Fully absolved through Thee I am, From sin and fear and guilt and shame." The unbeliever, on the other hand, shies away from such an examination. "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil," John 3:19. Happy indeed is he whose sin is covered by the blood of the Lamb of God. There is another covering many resort to - that of BLUFF. They deceive themselves by DENIAL. "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy," Proverbs 28:13. I call on you all today to look at Paul's exhortation to self-examination and his reasons for it.
