Supplication in the Spirit

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak,” Ephesians 6:18-20.

We considered the importance of prayer to the soldier of Christ. It is by prayer that he obtains the graces that form his armour and it is by prayer that he is enabled to use the armour.

But note:

I. THE PEOPLE OF GOD MUST NOT JUST PRAY FOR THEMSELVES BUT BEAR UP OTHERS ALSO

1. The grace of God will makes us unselfish.

It will cause us to be like Christ. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:32. In like manner we will be moved to consider others. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2.

2. It is folly to think that others have no needs.

It is a deception designed to depress us and to deprive others of our prayers. This exhortation indicates that others do have needs. The more we see our own needs the more we will see the needs of others. Paul felt his need and so knew of the needs of others.

II. THE SERVANTS OF GOD PARTICULARLY HAVE NEEDS

1. The high office they hold creates needs.

He was an ambassador, the representative of the King. Being such, he will draw much fire from the enemy.

2. The enormous task.

“. . . that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,” verse 19. Such a task, given man’s disposition of hating the truth, is most difficult indeed and would be impossible without the mighty working of God’s power. Gospel is a “mystery” to natural man. 1 Cor 2:7-10.

3. The intimidating circumstances.

He desired to be bold, to speak with power and confidence. He must hold nothing back.

4. Despite his imprisonment.

He was in bonds, literally “in a chain.” Here is man’s wickedness on display. The ambassador of the Redeemer is imprisoned and that for preaching God’s mercy and love!
