God's will done on earthRev. Ivan FosterMatthew 6:10 · Sunday - AMSun Oct 11, 2015
The Believer's prayer for the will of God to be done on earth or the believer's desire to see heaven's rule on earth "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven," Matthew 6:9-10. (Preached in Kilskeery FPC, Lord's Day morning October 11th, 2015, by Rev Ivan Foster) What vital instruction is here regarding prayer! Paul says in Romans 8:26: " . . . we know not what we should pray for as we ought." This is but an endorsement of the Saviour's plain teaching in this passage in Matt 6. The Saviour readily responds to the disciple's request ( Luke 11:1) and gives us the model prayer for the believer. In Matthew's account, the Saviour is recorded as saying: "After this manner therefore pray ye, " Matthew 6:9. I must stress that there is here no mention of the use of saints or Mary as mediators. Nor is it required of us to recite the exact words for Luke does not quote the exact same words as Matthew, thus indicating that this is a pattern and not a prayer to be repeated verbatim. It is not repeated in any of the inspired writings of the apostles though the substance of it is often seen in the prayers recorded in the New Testament. The prayer is worthy of the closest study and being made the basis of all our prayers. I wish to consider the 3rd petition of the prayer. "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."
