Ruth finding Rest Ruth 3:1-18 (Preached in Lewes FPC) The book of Ruth records the progress of the spiritual pilgrimage of a young Moabitish woman who has come to true saving faith in Jehovah, the God of Israel. Her faith is spoken of in 2:12. "The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust," Ruth 2:12. The providential dealings of God with her in mercy is ever so instructive for the saint of God today. Chapter 3 records her advancing toward "REST." The word appears some 7 times in the OT. The first occurrence is in Genesis 8:9 and there is another in Psalm 116:7. These texts illustrates the nature of the "REST" Naomi had in mind for her. She was speaking of marriage but used the word "REST". Both texts speak of a state of "ease, peace, and contentment." It is the opposite of "distress, trouble and uncertainty." The Lord has brought Ruth closer to "REST" by bringing her into contact with Boaz and his kindness. What we have here is an illustration of what Christ offers to believer in Matt 11:28-29 - (Gen 8:4, Ex 20:11). What Christ is calling His people to is a deeper, lasting experience of rest and quietness and victory in Him - the Spirit-filled victorious life. Those invited are those with a sense of sin and burdens and who are ready to look to Him in obedience for rest. The REST He offers is found under Christ's yoke, serving Him as an apprentice.
