Christ shows Nicodemus a 1400-year-old picture of the cross. "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up," John 3:14. (Preached at the evening service in Kilskeery FPC) John 3:1-21 is the record of a conversation between Christ and a Pharisee called Nicodemus. Christ lays emphasis upon the essentials of true religion and turns Nicodemus away from his attempts at flattering Him. In verses 3, 5, & 7 the 'New Birth' is emphasised. In verse 14 the Saviour again uses the word "must". Here the emphasis is upon atonement. Man must have new life but it can only be given him upon the basis of the atoning death of Christ. These are matters that must be grasped if the sinner is to be saved. I wish to preach upon verse 14.
