Challenging Questions of Christ, 6 "And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ," Mark 8:27-29. "And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child," Mark 9:21. In this passage, we are allowed to join the band of disciples and the Saviour as they journeyed from village to village, preaching the gospel. We are permitted to listen in to a conversation that took place. It stands in contrast to another conversation the disciples had, Mark 9:33-34. Here is carnal man and his proud ambitions revealed. What a divergence between the two conversations! One was born out of sinful ambitions while the other was initiated by the Saviour and centred upon Him. The word "dispute" in Mark 9:33 is closely related to the word dispute in Jude 9. There it is used in reference about a contending between Michael the archangel and the devil. The discussion between the disciples in Mark 9:33 would have been tainted by sinful ambitions! On the other hand, this conversation was initiated by the Saviour.
