Pictures of Christ - 15 - Elijah the prophet 1 Kings 18:36-40. Slaying the false prophets We come to one of the more controversial events in the story of Elijah. His confrontation with the false prophets and his slaying of them by the brook Kishon. Read 18:36-40. * Can we say that in this matter Elijah was a picture of the Lord Jesus? We most certainly can and must. * Please note that the Lord had signally endorsed Elijah's actions that day, verse 38, answered prayer after the slaying of the prophets, 42, 45-46. * Furthermore, Elijah, in slaying the false prophets, was but obeying the Word of God, Deut 13:1-5. * Remember, the Saviour had said: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled," Matthew 5:17-18. * The death penalty will yet be applied to idolaters. "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death," Revelation 21:8. The sentence of God will eventually catch up with sinful defiers of God's law.
