Pictures of Christ - 15 - Elijah the prophet. * The last conflict will entail a destruction of mankind's ultimate idolatry and all who promoted it, as the slaying of the false prophets at Kishon depict. The A/C will be the ultimate idolator since he will declare himself God! "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God," 2 Thess 2:4. He will be slain by the Saviour. "And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming," 2 Thess 2:8. * There will be an acknowledging of the Lord by Israel. Just like Mt Carmel: "And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God," 1 Kings 18:39. Zech 12:4-5, 10; 13:1-2, 9. * The refreshing of the earth by the abundance of rain will follow. "And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain . . . . . And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain," 1 Kings 18:41, 45. * Elijah's miraculous departure to heaven witnessed by faithful Elisha. That was followed by the descent of double portion of God's Spirit upon Elijah, a foreshadowing of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Elisha went on to do twice the number of miracles than did Elijah. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father," John 14:12.
