"The New Testament Christian" Part 3. Studies in 1 Thessalonians 1 We are going to try and overtake ourselves by combining the topic 'The effect of the Gospel' and 'The example of the Converts.' Thus we will be on schedule to completing our studies in the time planned. The power that attended Paul's preaching was evident in the wonderful conversions that were wrought. We must ever bear in mind that Paul spent only three sabbath days reasoning with them out of the scriptures, Acts 17:2. Yet in that brief time it is clear that a wonderful work of grace was wrought amongst the people and a strong, vibrant church was founded. Our topic tonight entails the examining of this work of conversion with the aim of seeing the character of NT evangelism and the sad contrast with today's activities. I. The effect of the Gospel 1. Amongst the people there was a reverent recognising that what they heard was the Word of God. 'Ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God.' 2. They received the Word of God. 'Having received the word.' 3. They received the Word of God despite the bitter opposition of men. 'Received the word in much affliction." 4. They became followers of Paul and of the Lord Jesus. 'Ye became followers of us, and of the Lord.' 5. They walked in the Truth embraced by all the churches. 2: II. The example of the Converts 1. They became patterns of faith. 'ye were ensamples to all. . .' 2. Their testimony was far-reaching. ' . . from you sounded out the word of the Lord . . . ' 3. They were a great help to work of Paul. ' . . . so that we need not to speak any thing.'
