Closing considerations. Before we leave the book of Ruth I want us to notice the foreshadowing of future events that are presented to us in the book. I believe we can see here pictures of: 1. Fall of Israel. 2. Gathering of the Gentiles. 3. The restoration of the Jews. 4. The reign of Christ on this earth. --------------------------------------- The author of this book was, I believe, Samuel. He anointed David king and would have been aware of something of the wonderful purpose of God through David. Samuel died before David came to power so Samuel would have had a longing to see David's glory. Acts 3:21, 24. Prophets knew more than most Christians believe they did. Likewise, we should have a longing for Christ's reign here on earth, Rev 5:10. Note here that the redeemed in heaven are looking forward to reigning on earth. Note the title of Christ in verse 5. David's reign most certainly foreshadows future events. A. Though anointed king, (1 Sam 16:12-13) he was rejected by the majority and followed by only a remnant. 1 Sam 22:1-2. B. He came to power after the death of a usurper, Saul. The choice of Saul entailed a rejection of the Lord, 1 Sam 8:7. Christ will reign in Zion after a period when Israel will have chosen Antichrist. John 5:43. C. Israel was in a state of utter defeat when David came to the throne. 1 Sam 31:1. Israel was scattered and at the mercy of the enemy. So it will be when Christ returns to earth. Zech 14:2-3. D. David's reign reached great heights. 1 Kings 4:24. A partial and unsustained fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham, Gen 15:18. The complete fulfillment will come on Christ's return, Rev 11:15.
